Sepilok Rainforest Discovery Centre
Dates: 20 Jul
After spending a couple of cold, rainy nights at Mount Kinabalu Park I jumped on the bus at 9am over to Sepilok to do the Rainforest Discovery Centre, Orangutans & Proboscis Monkeys. There are more busses throughout the day but nobody ever has a solid answer as to when they actually arrive, so if you’re wanting to take the bus from Mount Kinabalu I would highly recommend getting up and waiting on the road before 9am. The bus cost 45RM (~£8-9) and took around 5 hours. If you’re staying in Sepilok area make sure to tell the bus driver otherwise you’ll end up in Sandakan and have to take a taxi back to Sepilok.
I would recommend staying around Sepilok area as opposed to Sandakan. Being a city Sandakan has more going on, but the main attractions in the area are all around Sepilok so every day you want to do something you’ll have to add on the cost of a taxi to and from Sepilok, or pay the extortionate prices that tour guides charge.
I stayed at Nature Lodge Sepilok, which was the cheapest place in the area and was fantastic; very friendly staff, comfy beds & clean rooms. Nature Lodge is on the corner of Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC), so when I arrived from Mount Kinabalu I checked in and head over to the RDC.
Sepilok Rainforest Discovery Centre is a nice place to burn a few hours, and I’ve heard you can occasionally see an Orangutan there that’s made its way over from the Rehab Centre just down the road. I didn’t get such luck but it’s still a lovely walk nonetheless.
I’d recommend heading down if you have a few hours to burn – although I wouldn’t prioritise the discovery centre over visiting the Orangutan Rehab Centre or Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary.
